Labelling & consumer sorting information
From 12 August 2028 — or 24 months after the relevant implementing act, whichever is later — packaging must carry a harmonised pictogram label showing its material composition so consumers can sort it. Reusable packaging must additionally carry a reusability label and a QR code or other data carrier from 12 February 2029. Recycled-content claims trigger their own labelling rules, and labels or marks suggesting environmental performance that PPWR does not authorise are not allowed. Non-compliant stock already on the market benefits from a three-year sell-through period.
What you must do
- Plan artwork changes for every SKU sold in the EU, working back from 12 August 2028.
- Adopt the harmonised pictograms instead of national or in-house symbols.
- Add reusability marking and the QR/data carrier for reusable packaging.
