Restricted & banned formats

From 1 January 2030 the single-use packaging formats and uses listed in Annex V may no longer be placed on the market — these include certain grouped shrink-wrap, very light plastic carrier bags, single-use packaging for fresh fruit and vegetables below a weight threshold, and single-use packaging for food and drink consumed on the premises in hospitality. Limited derogations exist for micro-enterprises able to show alternatives are not technically feasible, and for products under protected geographical indications. National restrictions in force before 1 January 2025 may be kept. The Commission must publish guidance on Annex V by 12 February 2027.

What you must do

  • Screen your portfolio against the Annex V list.
  • Plan replacements, including reusable service ware if you serve on premises.
  • Check national rules, which may restrict further formats.
